Mitä yritykset voivat tehdä - ja mitä eivät

Internetissä lapsille palveluja tarjoavat yritykset kuulivat runsaasti toiveita, odotuksia, vaatimuksia ja jopa syytöksiä Safer Internet Forumissa. Järjestöjen, tutkijoiden ja yritysten vuosittainen kokoontuminen järjestettiin Brysselissä lokakuussa 2013.

Netti ei aina ole kiva paikka. Yritysten syyttäminen on helppoa, mutta johtaako se mihinkään?

Otetaan esimerkiksi kiusaaminen. On päivänselvää, että se aiheuttaa suurta surua. Sanat satuttavat fyysisiä toimia enemmän. Kun juuri sanat kuitenkin ovat yleisin tapa viestiä netissä, miten palveluntarjoajat voisivat estää kiusaamisen kokonaan? Yritykset voivat rakentaa järjestelmiä kiusaajien kiinniottamiseen ja uhrien auttamiseen. Ne eivät kuitenkaan voi kokonaan kitkeä kiusaamista - eivät ainakaan yksin.

Tämän takia tarvitaan yhteistyötä. Koulut, järjestöt ja vanhemmat tekevät loistavaa työtä valmistellessaan lapsia nettielämään. Sen sijaan että tuomitaan kaikki kaupallinen, voitaisiin opettaa lapset erottamaan hyvä palvelu huonosta ja kertoa, kuinka netissä ylipäätään tulee käyttäytyä. Jos lapset sitten nettielämässä törmäävät ongelmiin, palveluntarjoajat voivat pelastaa tilanteen turvallisuusjärjestelmiensä avulla.

What can the industry do - and what it can't

A lot of expectations, wishes, demands and even blame was placed on the internet industry's shoulders in Safer Internet Forum 2013. The yearly get-together for organisations, researchers and companies took place in Brussels in October.

The internet is not always a nice place. It's easy to blame the industry, but is that the full story?

Let's take bullying as an example. There's no doubt that bullying brings great sorrow. Words often hurt more than physical actions. However, as words are the most common means of communication, how could any service provider stop bullying from happening? What the industry can do is to build systems to catch the bully and help the victim. But it can't prevent bullying from happening. At least not alone.

That's why we need to work together. Schools, organisations and parents do a great job preparing the kids to enter the online life. Instead of judging everything that's commercial, teach the kids how to tell a good service from a bad service and how to behave online in general. Then, if problems do occur in the online life, let the industry step in with their safety measures.

So, how do make the internet safer for kids? Let's drop the blame game and help each other out. We're ready.
